My name is David Secor. My candidacy for Congress in District 50 stands on a simple, but very important, principle. That an honest, average working-class person in San Diego County is a better candidate to represent the honest, average, working-class people in San Diego County than an out-of-touch puppet for special interests. I most firmly believe that with your support, with the support of the working, of those who would work but cannot, of those who demand that the Social Security and Medicare that they paid for be protected, of those who insist that our public education system be the best in the world again, of those who will no longer tolerate our current representative in District 52, who is running against me in the new District 50. Mr. Hunter has sided with those who believe that the economic problems America faces are CAUSED by working people, seniors, and children! According to Mr. Hunter, multi-national corporations, the "too big to fail" financial institutions and the super-rich are just innocent victims of the greed of the working people and our elderly, and not the other way around.
Their agenda seems to be that if they get rid of these old people, break the unions, end collective bargaining, get people to work for $7 an hour with no benefits, and destroy public education, then they can have the nation they want a throwback to the days of feudalism.
It is my job to convince the voters in District 50 to get involved. And get them, in turn, to convince their friends and family, and co-workers, who may have been sitting on the sidelines, or who are not registered or not been voting, that they MUST GET INVOLVED - they must get informed, and they MUST do the one thing that can set this nation back on a course that will honor THE PEOPLE in this country, the people who do the work!
There is one thing I know, and you know it, too - A CORPORATION IS NOT A PERSON!! Despite what our Supreme Court might say, you know deep down that this is not true. A corporation has no soul. A person is an individual, living, human being, and we know this. The opposition may not get it, but they are going to get it next November. They're going to get it from the working people, from the senior citizens who want nothing more than what they paid for their whole lives. They're going to get it from the youth, who refuse to lie down and accept a future as the "unemployed class". They're going to get it from the parents who REFUSE to tell their children "Sorry, the American Dream isn't for you, give it up". If Mr. Hunter wants China, he can go to China. We the People are taking control back, and we will not let ourselves continue to be victimized. The United States belongs to all of us, not just the elite few who would have themselves serve as our masters.
There’s an old Chinese curse that goes "May you live in interesting times". Right now, we are in the most interesting times that this world has seen since the Great Depression and World War II. We watch in disbelief as our elected representatives in Congress fight like two spoiled children bickering over an ice cream cone, desperately wishing that we could replace them with responsible adults who will attack the nation's pressing problems. Problems like corruption in government, unemployment, the attack on Social Security and Medicare, and our money sink of a foreign empire. Their infantile behavior would be funny, were so much not on the line. Their childish rants are demeaning to an institution which, in the past, felt a true sense of duty to their constituents. Congress is an institution which used to stand for the interests of the people, not just of those with money.
Despite what Fox News would have you believe, America is NOT on the verge of collapse. Armageddon, or the Apocalypse, are NOT lurking just around the corner. Puppet politicians on both sides of the aisle encourage this sort of thinking, Mr. Hunter among them. They want an America living in a constant state of fear, anger, confusion, and desperation. They know that in that state, many of us will panic and toss our best judgment aside. They want us to see our brothers and sisters as enemies, see the poor and the elderly as a problem. They would have you believe that these innocent parties are the cause of all the nation's ills and should be disregarded, or even condemned. I cannot emphasize strongly enough that THEY. ARE. WRONG.
Rather, we are at a crossroads. In the 2012 elections, We the People will determine what path our great nation is to take going forward. If you do not register to vote, if you do not help your family and friends register to vote, you will be voting anyway, without knowing it. Not voting is just as good as voting for the wrong side. The side that says that We the People don't matter anymore, and that our children and our grandchildren do not deserve the American Dream.
We the People must stand up, and we must stand together. I ask your support as someone who has been a working man all my life. As the saying goes, it takes one to know one. At the age of 20, I served in Vietnam with the 1st Air Cavalry Division. I was not an officer, I had no connections to give me a life of privilege. I fought on the front lines. I shipped out a private, and came back an E-S platoon leader. I would go on to get my B.A. from San Diego State, and later teach there. I've picked oranges with the farmers of Riverside County. I've built roads, cleaned houses, and cut lawns. I've been your cashier. I've been a truck driver, a warehouse man, a repairman, and a teacher. And through the last 19 years I worked for the Superior Court, I have never forgotten what it's like to be a working man. I've been out of work, and I've had to stand in line at the unemployment office. I know what it is like to go without health insurance. I know how humiliating it can be to ask for help. I know what it feels like to go through every day in despair, wondering how in the hell you are ever going to find a job. I will never forget that feeling, and I will never forget you. I will continue to work tirelessly this time, on behalf of the working men and women like myself, of seniors, veterans, the disabled, and our children. I will fight for those who have been denied their Constitutional rights. I will represent YOU, District 50, NOT the special interests who want to kidnap our government.
